Getting Your Home Ready for the Holidays

Autumn and back to school go hand in hand, but fall should also be the time of year you start thinking about the holidays, especially if you’re hosting. Now is a great time to get your house ready for overnight guests and family get-togethers.

Getting organized now will help reduce stress later and allow you to enjoy the time with family and friends. A little straightening and power organizing works wonders for the appearance of your home and your own satisfaction.

Focus on one room at a time. Consider starting with the guest room, especially if it’s not being used for other purposes.

Take inventory. Spend five minutes on the initial de-cluttering. Straighten books, knick-knacks, and photos. If the room has become a catch-all space, remove obvious misplaced items and return them to the correct spot in the house.

Purge unwanted items. This could include furniture that’s taking up too much space and making the room feel cluttered or unusable. Guest room closets tend to collect things that don’t fit anywhere else in the house. If you haven’t retrieved anything from that closet for the last 6-12 months, it’s a good indicator you might not need it anymore. Your guests will appreciate having closet space available when they visit, and you’ll have less clutter and more available space year-round.

Schedule time to drop off donations. Getting unwanted items out of the guest room is a good first step, but make sure those items don’t end up cluttering a different room of the house. Schedule time to take items to a donation center.

Freshen up the room. If the guest room needs new linens or a fresh coat of paint, cross those items off your to-do list now before the holiday rush.

Tempting as it might be to wait until you get a little closer to the holidays, you know how busy it gets. Getting your home ready now before the calendar fills up with extra commitments will keep you in the holiday spirit and allow you to enjoy an organized home.
